So the long wait for two newly ordered Montegrappa Extra’s has passed, and I received two beautiful Italian celluloid fountain pens this week.
The first is a Montegrappa Extra Colori Del Mare Turtle limited edition pen that is exclusive to a particular US pen dealer, and a very small run at that (each colour is limited to 15 pens!). This pen is finished off in a light brown celluloid with streaks of black and white that wonderfully plays to the lighting conditions. It is the same celluloid as the regular Tortoiseshell Extra, however, it features a wonderful two toned seahorse nib design and a wave inspired cap band etching. A really winning combination I think!
The second is a Montegrappa Extra Otto in Lapis Blue celluloid. This is another highly prized limited edition pen of 888 pieces that is different to the standard Extra in a few ways. Firstly, it is an 8 sided faceted pen that really sets off the celluloid material wonderfully. Secondly, it has a different style flat clip with a red lacquer backing. Thirdly, the cap band changes from the usual Greek key design to a Montegrappa filigree design that looks out-of-this-world beautiful. Fourthly, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it has a much higher price tag than the regular Extra. Oh well…
I’ve not had much time to write about them as I am having a little bit of a hard time putting them down for any extended period of time other than sleeping. I’ve posted a couple of quick snaps below for your to bathe in the rich celluloid goodness for now. A full review of both will be posted over the next couple of weeks, stay tuned!
